Studies show that there are 17-20 estimated species of penguins which are situated in the southern hemisphere. These black and white birds cannot fly, but in contrast they are very good swimmers and can average 4-8 mph underwater. Their diet consists of fish, squid, krill and other small marine animals.
In order to protect themselves from ocean predators, they have their black and white feathers for their disguise while they are swimming. Their white stomachs help them blend in with the sky when seen from below by swimming predators. Conversely, their black feathers help them blend in with the dark blue of the ocean, and help them avoid being seen as easily by flying predators from above.
Aside from their “tuxedo” coloring, penguins are distinguished by their characteristic movement, “the waddle”. Another signature movement which is very common to most penguins is the efficient and hilarious “tobogganing” where they slide their white bellies across the snow.
Penguin costumes are always popular with everyone during costume parties, particularly for kids. Many costume stores contains good details for basic costumes for both children and adults. Penguin costumes may include a headpiece, a hood, or a head covering while some requires face painting to give the costume a complete look.
